Katie’s route into engineering was anything but conventional – and that’s exactly what makes it so important. Raised in Aviemore and initially set on a military career, Katie’s plans were upended after a medical discharge from the army. What followed were years of uncertainty and a series of short-term jobs – from warehouses to go-kart tracks – until a job advert from Hydrasun caught her attention. It was for a CNC Operator Apprentice role. She didn’t know what CNC machining was. She hadn’t considered engineering before. But she took a chance. “In the beginning, I hated it. I didn’t think I could do it. I asked to be taken off the machines three times,” Katie recalls. “Each time, I was told no. I’m so thankful for that. Now, I love what I do. I’ve become the most competent apprentice in my team.” Katie’s story is one of self-belief earned the hard way. It’s a story that countless women in engineering will recognise - stepping into a male-dominated space, facing self-doubt, and pushing through to claim your place. At the heart of Katie’s success is a working environment that believed in her potential when she wasn’t sure of it herself. Hydrasun’s apprenticeship programme is more than a pipeline for technical skills, it’s a launchpad for people like Katie. Our teams offered Katie mentorship, patience and hands-on learning that allowed her to turn fear into confidence, and hesitation into mastery. “Katie is a clear example of what can happen when talent meets opportunity,” says her manager. “She has not only developed technical excellence but has become a role model for others starting their journey.”
We are extremely proud to celebrate the graduation of our Mechanical Instrumentation Technician Apprentice - Louie Johns! “When Louie started with Hydrasun he impressed from our first introduction with his confidence and his determination, committing to a 42-mile round trip, DAILY! across East Cleveland to get to work and back. From the outset Louie grasped the apprenticeship with both hands; asking questions, investing in and developing his own tool kit, taking on board instructions and putting in extra time if there was ever an opportunity to learn a new skill or support the company! Congratulations Louie.” David Whiles – Operations Manager, Teesside When speaking with Louie about his journey with Hydrasun so far, he said: "An apprenticeship with Hydrasun was perfect for me, as I could gain hands on experience whilst also progressing with my BTEC qualification. My long-term aspirations are to climb the career ladder and achieve a leadership role. During my apprenticeship, I have learnt an incredible amount of skills and knowledge; from competency with tools and machinery, health and safety, problem solving & grown my communication skills and confidence. I enjoyed learning how to bend pipe, as it was a very frustrating thing to learn at first, but now I am much more confident when doing this. I think one of the most helpful aspects in my apprenticeship, has been the continuous meetings with my assessor. This helped, as I knew what was needed to do next to progress. It helped that much that I was able to pass my apprenticeship early due to the progress I was making. Everyone at the Teesside facility has been brilliant during my apprenticeship. I would like to give a massive Thank You to the team who supported me. They always answer any questions that I have." We asked Louie what advice he would give to someone considering an apprenticeship, he said: "An apprenticeship is a mix of practical work and study. You earn a wage whilst gaining hands on experience and working toward a qualification. It’s a stepping stone to a full-time job and further qualifications. Always be curious and ask questions." Congratulations again Louie!
